Protektor and Videograf realize extraordinary room-in-room concept with lightweight steel construction
In the middle of the city of Karlsruhe, videographer Clemens May, together with Protektor, the leading manufacturer of building profiles, has realized a remarkable lightweight steel construction project – the construction of a modern office building in a greenhouse that is over 70 years old.

“The project combines creativity, sustainability and modern lightweight steel construction in a unique way. We are proud to be part of this visionary implementation,” says Matthias Hartmann, Team Leader Lightweight Steel Construction at Protektor. Both he and Sascha Ohnemus, Product Manager for Lightweight Steel Construction, calculated, planned and supported the project.
Mr. May provided a rough sketch of his idea in advance and the lightweight steel construction team at Protektor turned his vision into a feasible plan. From the ground-breaking ceremony to the plastering of the walls, the client carried out the construction work largely on his own. “This shows the simplicity of our system,” says Sascha Ohnemus, who was regularly on site to provide helpful expert tips.
The construction time of just two months clearly sets this project apart from conventional building projects. A professional builder could even erect this property in just 2 weeks. Protektor made a significant contribution to efficiency by combining lightweight steel construction with classic drywall construction. This innovative solution was not only easy to implement, but also demonstrated the versatility and adaptability of lightweight steel construction.
The challenges during the construction phase, including cramped conditions, especially in the ceiling area, the unfinished floor of the old building with large irregularities and high temperatures in the greenhouse of up to 45 degrees, were successfully overcome. The resistance of the Protektor lightweight steel profiles to extreme climatic conditions also played a decisive role in the success of the project.
The sustainability aspects should also be emphasized. The use of recyclable steel and the resulting cradle-to-cradle approach also puts environmental protection at the heart of such a project. Lightweight steel construction also benefits the preservation and longevity of the building, as there is no risk of moisture ingress.
The collaboration between Protektor and Clemens May was celebrated as a success story for individual room concepts and customized solutions. The project not only stands for creativity and innovation, but also for a successful symbiosis between nature and modern architecture. The Protektor profiles not only offered technical precision, but also individual customization to the client’s needs.
“I am very happy to have taken the plunge, as the result really exceeded my expectations. The cooperation with Protektor could not have gone better in this case,” says the satisfied client. From the very beginning, his idea was to have a place that he could create, change and transform according to his own ideas. This was and is possible for him with lightweight steel construction from Protektor.
This is the basic idea behind Protektor’s lightweight steel construction team. “We supply preliminary structural calculations, drawings and sophisticated design approaches. Our lightweight steel construction system offers a high degree of variability. Our customers are offered sustainable solutions tailored to their needs that are also cost-efficient,” says Mr. Ohnemus.
