Façade infill creates more living space
Former office building gains additional living space with Protektor’s edificio lightweight steel construction system
Frankfurt Westend, conversion of an office building into an apartment building with 77 units and approx. 2,400m2 of living space. ELA 105 GmbH commissioned Siniat and Kusan Trockenbau und Akustik GmbH to implement the project. Protektor supplied the planning and the lightweight steel profiles for the load-bearing substructure of the façade, making it possible to gain extra living space during the conversion.
The basis for the additionalm2 of living space is a prefabricated lightweight steel wall developed by Siniat and Protektor as a façade infill. This “Infill Wall” uses gypsum-based panels as external cladding for direct weathering. It also meets the planning specifications of Mainz-based monochrom architekten for the project: lightweight construction, little additional weight, no combustible materials.
Protektor’s Edificio lightweight steel construction system enables innovative solution
The aim of the conversion was to retain existing areas and gain additional space. The technical solution: the new façade was inserted into the building structure and placed in front of it with the help of steel angle profiles. This saved a considerable net area of the existing building. Heavy-duty dowels were used to attach the steel brackets to the front of the ceilings. The edificio “Infill Walls” made of U and C profiles from the Protektor lightweight steel construction system were applied to the steel angles.
Structural verification, fire and sound tests
The structural verification for this innovative façade solution was already provided in advance by the calculations of the well-established project partners Siniat and Protektor. Incidentally, the tried and tested teamwork also applies to fire and noise tests.
Our lightweight steel construction team provides support in the planning phase
Protektor relieves planners with a sample structural analysis for façade infills. Do you also need to make project-related adjustments? No problem. We also provide architects with clear 3D drawings of the façade infill – for all the details, a better idea and for the client.
With Edificio lightweight steel construction, façades can be built using standardized systems – quickly, flexibly and sustainably.
And if the construction site takes longer? No problem – thanks to the special waterproof Weather Defense panel from Siniat, the exterior wall can be exposed to the weather for up to 12 months.
Lightweight steel construction with Edifico from Protektor enables fast, flexible and sustainable façade construction
- Low construction weight of the outer wall
- Savings on primary load-bearing structures
- Dimensional stability
- Low construction weight of the outer wall
- No additional fire load in construction
- without organic components (moisture, mold)
- with EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)
Thanks to the special waterproof Weather Defence panel from Siniat, the exterior wall can be exposed to the elements for up to 12 months until the final façade design.
Façade infill from Protektor
- Part of the outer shell for skeleton construction
- non-load-bearing exterior wall
- absorbs wind and impact loads
- presented variant achieves additional space gain
- achieves very good U-values, KFW40 is also possible
- offers maximum flexibility and allows high assembly speed
